Longwa, Nagaland: The Last Village of Headhunters at
We have just returned from our amazing trip to Nagaland in the North Eastern India. One of the most beautiful places we visited was Longwa Village, situated in the Mon District of Nagaland and at the Indo-Myanmar (Burma) border. The residents of Longwa village enjoy complete freedom of movement in both India and Myanmar, akin to a dual citizenship. We traveled a long way from Kohima (the capital city of Nagaland) to this tribal village to meet the last feared, tattooed Headhunters of the Konyak tribe, who once brought home their enemies' heads as trophies. We stayed in the village for a few days, observed the way of life of the Konyak Tribe, and would love to share our experience with you through this vlog at @TaylesBeyondBorders1. #longwa#nagaland#nagalandtourism#Headhunters#konyakTribe#IndiaMyanmarBorder

Vijaynagar (also known as Vijay Nagar and Vijoynagar) is the most remote town and circle headquarters in the Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh, India. According to the 2011 census, Vijaynagar has a population of 4,438. Location Vijaynagar is 157 km (98 mi) from the nearest navigable road in India located at Miao by foot. It is bordered to the south and east by Myanmar, and to the north by a thick forest of the Namdapha National Park. Nearby Indian cities are Miao, Hayuliang, and Tezu. Putao is the nearest city in Myanmar. History In a 1961–1962 expedition led by the Assam Rifles, Maj. Gen A.S Gauraya found an unexplored serene landscape of Indian territory between the three-sided border of Burma (Myanmar) and named the region Vijaynagar in honour of his son "Vijay".[citation needed] After the settlement process was initiated by the North East Frontier Agency (now known as Arunachal Pradesh), two hundred families of Assam Rifles soldiers (95% of whom are Gurkhas) settled there. Today, Vijaynagar is a cluster of 12 villages on the border with Myanmar: Ramnagar, Chididi, Majgoan, Two-hut, Budhamandir, Phaparbari, Daragoan, Gehrigaon, Topi-Hill, Preeti Nagar, (Assam Rifle settlers) Hazolo, and Dawadi (Yobin inhabitants). Transportation Vijaynagar can only be reached on foot, or by air via the Vijaynagar Airport (also called the Vijaynagar Advanced Landing Ground). This is the 8th Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) in Arunachal Pradesh upgraded by the Indian Airforce (IAF) and Indian Army (IA) in September 2019 to allow the landing of fighter jets and large transport planes.[1] The upgrade involved building local link roads among villages around Vijaynagar. A road connection to nearby Miao, costing ₹225 crores, was dedicated in February 2013 but has been delayed by environmental activists concerned about the National Park.[1] The issue was resolved by adding a prefabricated bridge to protect park life and facilitate monitoring by the Forests Department. In September 2019, the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh ordered new construction by first completing the central bridge road, already being built in Kolkata.[3] There are plans to extend this road to Putao Airport in Myanmar under the Look East policy, thus connecting it to both India's and Myanmar's national highway networks. Vijaynagar would be the eastern terminus of the Arunachal Pradesh Frontier Highway, a proposed 2,000 km (1,200 mi) road following the McMahon Line to Mago and Thingbu in the west.
Longtime ago someone commented in one of my videos, that why don't you cover the North East, isn't a part of India?? I really felt that comment and planned for a trip covering all 7 sisters, Assam,Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram,Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland and Tripura. Unfortunately I couldnt cover Mizoram this time. In this series you will see the transportation system of North Eastern states as there are many difficulties there (due to terrain). I have tried to cover the Goverment buses of all states, the trains and some flights for a amazing scenic view. Get to know about North East in this amazing series. One of the most popular things to do in Imphal, Manipur is to cross the India Myanmar border from Moreh town and go to Tamu town without a visa. There are a few markets on the other side of the border in Tamu, a monastery, and you can also try some Burmese food. You need your Aadhar card to make this visit and according to rules cannot stay overnight in Myanmar. It is fascinating to see how cultures have no borders, only countries do. People on both the sides are very very similar. You can take a rickshaw into Tamu town by paying just 20 Rupees. Overall, it is a must must do when in Imphal!
Stratfor explains how Myanmar's position in Southeast Asia historically has made it vulnerable to invasions by larger powers seeking strategic resources and access to trade routes.
Moreh, as a rapidly developing trade point with an integrated customs and immigration checkpoint, plays a very important role in India's Look East Policy, trade and commerce under ASEAN–India Free Trade Area,india-Myanmar relationship, india–Myanmar–Thailand road connectivity and Trans-Asian Railway connectivity. Tamu in Myanmar, just across the Menal river from Moreh, is connected to Moreh via 2 road bridges: The Indo-Myanmar Friendship Bridge and a newer Moreh ICP Bridge which connects the Moreh Integrated Check Post (Moreh ICP). Tamu in Myanmar connects Moreh in India to Kalewa-Yagyi-Mandalay in Myanmar and Mae Sot in Thailand through the India–Myanmar–Thailand Trilateral Highway.(wikipedia)

This is mon, Here we stayed the night before moving on to our next destination, longwa, the village of the last headhunters. On a bright Monday morning, we started our journey towards longwa one of the biggest and most prominent villages inhabited by the konyak tribe of Nagaland. Leaving behind the broken mountain roads, that we traveled on for the last 3 days, we started on a narrow mountain road with the lush green hills of Burma on one side, a clear blue sky on top of our heads and a cool breeze accompanying us as we traveled towards our destination. The konyaks are the largest of the 16 Tribes of Nagaland and longwa is one of the most important villages to them. There are two reasons what makes longwa special, one is that the village stands on the international border between India and Myanmar and second is that in longwa, resides the chief or king of the konyaks commonly known as angh. Yes, you heard that correct, they are still ruled by a king. Longwa sits at quiet an altitude hence it provides a grand view of the mountains and valleys all around it, but as our guide revealed, that this location was also strategic in the old days when the villagers could monitor enemy activity and impending attacks from the village itself. Once we were in longwa, we hiked a few narrow trails and climbed a flight of stairs to reach a small patch of land with a breathtaking view of the mountains. At the center was a small concrete pillar that marked the international border between India and Myanmar. On both sides of the pillar were carvings, one side in Hindi and the other side in Burmese language. So here we were straddling an international border without passport or visa. The people residing in longwa actually have dual citizenship of India and Myanmar and hence can move freely in both countries. The angh's house in longwa is actually longitudinally split between the two countries, the international border actually cuts through the house making half of the house in India and other half in Myanmar. The angh's house is the grandest of all in longwa and to us it looked more like a museum than a house. Konyaks were some of the most fiercest warriors and hunters among the nagas, and the memoirs of those Glory days are still on display in the angh's house, like old weapons and numerous animal skulls, hung on the walls. The konyaks prize them. We were allowed a glimpse of the angh's house and kitchen where we got a chance to visit and spend some time with angh's family, huddled around the hearth, sipping black tea and chatting about the old ways. Konyaks were known to be the fiercest of headhunters and raids between villages were quite common in the old days to command authority and to acquire land. So the next konyak house we visited, waited for us with its own stories. We were greeted by a 76 year old former headhunter, sitting happily on his porch. His face had a beautiful dark tattoo, fading with age. Later we found out that he had claimed 3 lives while being an active headhunter and was given this tattoo by the queen herself. He also wore colorful beaded ornaments with animal horns jutting out of his ear lobes and headgear decorated with wild boars teeth. This older generation has now resorted to smoking opium and travelling in their past Glory days.these are the last generation of headhunters who severed their enemies heads before the government banned this barbaric practice. These men will take the traditions, stories and the famous face tattoos to their Graves with them.Their stories are still recited in the morangs or the traditional schools in every konyak village along with some other significant history lessons but as dust settles on the old days they become more and more and unclear with each passing day. We are sure that there are many such interesting stories and facts that hide in Nagaland with the other tribes and our team shall surely try to reach them too in the future. But this journey gave us a purpose to know more about and preserve the stories that are getting lost everyday from different parts of our country.
