Join us: https://bit.ly/3Rz1uCH In a bid to boost air route connectivity in hill districts, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday launched the Imphal-Ukhrul-Imphal route passenger helicopter service in the presence of transport minister Khashim Vashum. Ministers, MLAs, the chief secretary, and officials from the transport department attended the virtual programme held at CM’s secretariat. “The air route connectivity between Imphal and Ukhrul will serve as a convenient means of travel and transportation while boosting commercial activities between the two districts, and it will further help in strengthening developmental work in various sectors,” the chief minister said. The fare from Imphal to Ukhrul and vice versa will be Rs 2,500. Manipur Heli Service was first launched in 2018 under the Ministry of Home Affairs’ subsidy scheme, with 75% amount borne by the Center and 25% by the state government. With the launch of a new air route connectivity from Imphal to Ukhrul, the passenger helicopter service in Manipur is now connecting from Imphal to Tamenglong, Jiribam and border town Moreh. Last year, under the same scheme, the helicopter service was also launched from Imphal to Churachandpur, Imphal to Aizawl via Churachandpur, Imphal to Lairouching and Imphal to Dimapur via Lairouching. According to the chief minister, in the last five years (2018-2023), the Manipur Heli Service has provided helicopter service to over 31,163 passengers, including emergency relief and rescue operations as well as medical evacuations. CM Biren also assured to introduction the heli service to more places in the state besides the district headquarters to address the connectivity issue and enhance transportation service in the region. During the programme, CM Biren also launched the transport offices in five districts, namely Pherzawl, Kakching, Noney, Kamjong and Jiribam. Expressing gratitude to the chief minister and transport minister, Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah said it was a long-awaited development. He further informed that the biggest challenge in the hill district is the infrastructure deficit. “The roads are in terrible shape and it is disgraceful to be called National Highway as the entire Ukhrul town with 56 localities are like in a slump condition with no blacktop road,” he said. Singularly Ukhrul because there is no other district headquarters in the state with that kind of infrastructure deficit, he added.

The Central government has given the Manipur government the authorization to begin offering helicopter services from Imphal International Airport to Dimapur in Nagaland, with a break at Leirouching in the Senapati district of Manipur from November onwards. Issuing a statement, Manipur Transport Director Dr. Nivedita Lairenlakpam informed that the fare for the Imphal to Leirouching route and vice versa will be Rs 2,000, while the fare for the Leirouching (Senapati) to Dimapur Airport route and vice versa will be Rs 4,000.
