UCLA 팔로스버디스에 새 캠퍼스 조성…신입생 입학정원 3천명 늘린다
UCLA가 랜초 팔로스 버디스에 새 캠퍼스를 조성한다.
27일 UCLA는 랜초팔로스 버디스에 부지를 매입해 새 캠퍼스를 조성할 계획이라고 공식 발표했다.
UCLA측은 새 캠퍼스를 조성하는 것은 대학 입학 문호를 확대하고 포화 상태인 웨스트 LA 캠퍼스 밀집도를 완화시키기 위한 것으로 팔로스 버디스와 샌피드로에 35.5에이커 부지를 매입했다고 밝혔다.
새 캠퍼스가 조성되는 부지는 Marymount California University 소유 24.5에이커와 샌피드로 인근 11에이커이다
UCLA 는 이 부지를 8천만달러에 매입하는 절차를 거의 마무리했다고 밝혔다. 이 부지는 최근 폐교한 메리마운티 캘리포니아 대학으로 부터 약 8천만달러에 매입하는 것으로 알려졌다.
UCLA가 새 캠퍼스 조성에 나서게 된 것은 입학 정원을 최대 3천명 확대하기 위한 것이다.
진 블록 UCLA 총장은 이날 공식 발표문을 통해 “새 캠퍼스는 UCLA가 2030년까지 학부생 3천명, 대학원생 350명을 증원하기 위한 전략 중 하나”라고 말했다.
UCLA는 새 캠퍼스에 학생 1000명을 수용하는 기숙사도 새로 건설할 계획이다.
6600명 신입생 모집에 지원자 14만명이 몰린 UCLA는 정원 확대가 현재 가장 시급한 당면 과제 중 하나여서 새 캠퍼스 조성 작업에 박차를 가하고 있다.
또, UC 차원에서도 오는 2030년까지 UC 전체 입학 정원을 최대 3만 3천명까지 확대하는 방안을
추진하고 있어 UCLA의 새 캠퍼스 조성 작업은 속도가 붙을 것으로 보인다.

The university announced they have acquired two properties belonging to the now-closed Marymount University in Rancho Palos Verdes and San Pedro. The $80 million land acquisition is the largest in UCLA history, according to university officials.

With the expansion, UCLA will be able to enroll an additional 1,000 students.
"As new demand for our academic offerings continues to grow, this acquisition will allow us to expand student access in line with UC's 2030 goals, strengthen our connections to the greater L.A. region, and deepen our institutions research and public service impact," UCLA Chancellor Gene Block said in a statement.
The acquisition includes Marymount's 24.5-acre main campus in Rancho Palos Verdes, 30 miles south of Westwood, and an 11-acre residential site in San Pedro. The purchase was approved by the University of California regents on Sept. 22.
Marymount shuttered earlier this year due to rising costs and declining enrollments. There was apparently intense interest in the properties from residential developers.
"We chose UCLA because it has a long track record of educational excellence, and is perfectly suited to build upon the mission of teaching and community service we established here," Brian Marcotte, president of Marymount University, said in a statement.

The $80 million purchase will enable the instruction of 1,000 students. It's the largest land acquisition in UCLA's history.
“As demand for our academic offerings continues to grow, this acquisition will allow us to expand student access in line with UC’s 2030 goals, strengthen our connections to the greater L.A. region, and deepen our institution’s research and public service impact," UCLA Chancellor Gene Block said in a statement.
Those goals include producing 200,000 more undergraduates and graduates, achieving a 90% graduation rate and eliminating gaps in the graduation rates among first-generation and underrepresented groups
UCLA is already a large landowner in L.A. County, with spaces in downtown and more than 250 patient care facilities.
Marymount California University President Brian Marcotte pointed to a shared mission in explaining the decision to sell to UCLA. Developers were also interested in the properties.
“We are certain UCLA will be an outstanding steward of the campus for the city of Rancho Palos Verdes, San Pedro and the South Bay," he said in a statement.
Marymount California University closed at the end of this summer, attributing the decision to the COVID-19 pandemic, declining enrollment, rising costs and a failed merger with Saint Leo University in Florida.
Enrolled MCU students were given the option to transfer to more than five dozen schools, including a majority of California State University schools and UC Merced.
UCLA is establishing a task force to plan how best to use the property, and officials say it may be up and running as early as next year.
