They considered themselves linked to the Achaemenid legacy and after displacing the Parthians would expand on that legacy. It is one of the most fascinating periods in the history of the region.

Welcome to part 1 of the new "Parthia Rises" series! The series will cover the rise and fall of the Parthian Empire. The episode starts with a bit of background for those new to the channel or who have not watched the "Persia Rises" series. In the chaos after Alexander's death, several new Hellenistic Diadochi kingdoms and empires were carved out of his empire. They fought wars for roughly 40 years.
During the chaos a tribe of Iranian nomads called the "Parni" saw an opportunity to sweep in and conquer the territory known as Parthia. In time they would refer to themselves by that name and form an empire. However, it would happen slowly over decades but its momentum could not be contained by the Seleucid's who would continue to lose ground until being absorbed by the Romans and disappearing from history.

Welcome to part 3 of the new "Parthia Rises" series! The series will cover the rise and fall of the Parthian Empire. The episode deals with the rise of Mithridates the Great who turned Parthia into an Empire. The Parthians were year after year, decade after decade pushing the Seleucids back towards the Mediterranean Sea. While Mithridates II was expanding the Parthian Empire, a new power was itself stirring in the west. The Roman Republic has by 100BCE pushed itself just to the western side of what was left of the Seleucids around the area of present day Syria. The two super powers of the Roman Republic and Parthia would meet each other. At stake, the future of the entire region hanging by the decisions of those in attendance.

History speaks of the insatiable greed and narcissism of one man, Crassus of Rome. He had a strong desire for military honors late in life to equal that of Pompey and Caesar the two others in the First Triumvirate.
This would bring him to the borders of the Iranian Parthian Empire. He would turn down assistance from the Armenians that may have made for a different outcome. He would then march his many legions across the Euphrates into Parthia, fully unprepared for what was about to befall him, his son and his men. The end result of this would be the famous Battle of Carrhae 53BCE. It would be a battle that the Roman Republic and successor Roman Empire would not soon forget.
The Parthians were a mobile people and their warfare reflected that. With their heavy and light cataphract capable of shooting arrows backwards at a full gallop. What they were not was a siege army like the Romans. In essence the two would be foils of each other for a few centuries.

Before the Roman Republic became the Roman Empire, Carrhae in 53BCE delivered Rome one of its most devastating defeats. The Iranian Empire of Parthia is still ruled by Orodes II whose son Pacorus and a Roman rebel Labienus capture much of southern Anatolia and Syria but the Roman Republic does not sit idle. Marc Antony sends his most capable general along with multiple Roman Legions to bring the war back to the Parthians.
This video covers the Romano-Parthian Wars of 53 to 38BCE of the Iranian Parthian Empire's history. These wars would continue once the Roman Empire was formed until the Iranian Parthian Empire's eventual defeat by the Persian Sassanid empire.In this video we explore the wars fought post Carrhae and pre Roman Empire.
What follows are several battles. The first of these is the 'Battle of the Cilician Gates". The second is the "Battle of Amanus Pass" and finally the "Battle of Mount Gindarus or Cyrrhestica".
These battles were part of the Roman Parthian wars and featured the famed Parthian Horse Archers in a rematch against the Roman Republic's famed "Heavy Infantry Roman Legionaries". Will Parthia gain the advantage or can Rome recover and in doing so avenge Carrhae?

Part 7 covers the events in the Parthian Empire between the death of Orodes II, Marc Antony's Parthian Wars and the Rise of Artabanus II. The Roman Parthian wars took place between the Roman Republic then Roman Empire and the Parthian Empire over the course of the the Parthian Empire's existence.
In this video we learn about Marc Antony's loss of almost 2/5th of his 80,000 soldiers with which he attempted to invade Parthia.

In this last episode we cover the years 50 with Vologases up to Artabanus the IV and the Fall of the Arsacid dynasty at the hands of Ardashir I who would go on to found the Sassanid Empire.
