This is not the Panama Canal, or Egypt's Suez Canal, but the Strait of Malacca in Southeast Asia. Bordered by Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, the Strait is an essential gateway for Asia, linking it to India, the Middle East and Europe. Today, almost 40% of the world's maritime trade passes through this route, which is on the verge of saturation. A situation that could soon change radically. Between geopolitical conflicts and acts of piracy, the region is currently experiencing tensions that could turn the course of international trade upside down. India has been militarizing the Andaman Nicobar Islands. In this video, we explore the militarization of Andaman Islands, crucial for current affairs. The Indian Naval Station Baaz, located on Great Nicobar Island, is undergoing significant upgrades. Nearby, INS Kohassa is enhancing its runway to accommodate larger military planes. These enhancements are part of India's strategy to fortify the Andaman and Nicobar island military strategy near the entrance of the Malacca Strait. We dive into the geopolitics of the Indian Ocean and the evolution of the Indo-China rivalry. The Indian Ocean is one of the most strategic seas globally, with significant Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs) passing through it. As India's geographical position surrounded by oceans on three sides becomes more critical, the Indian Navy has shifted its focus to countering Chinese intrusion in the wider Indian Ocean Region. India's naval modernization plan aims to increase its fleet from 140 to 200 warships by 2027, but resource constraints pose challenges. Despite these constraints, India is forming anti-China alliances with global partners and seeking to increase its influence in China’s backyard, the South China Sea. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands play a pivotal role in this strategy, offering a critical view of maritime traffic in the region. Military installations on these islands could boost India’s power projection and undermine Chinese activities. With seven military bases and 24 civilian ports in operation, India finalized a 10-year Military infrastructure development plan in 2019 to enhance existing facilities. This plan aims to accommodate larger warships, submarines, drones, missiles, aircraft carriers, fighter jets, and troops. The development of a network of undersea surveillance sensors is also being considered to detect and block Chinese submarines from entering India's exclusive economic zone. These developments are troubling China, leading to occasional escalations in tensions in the Himalayas. However, these distraction tactics can only delay but not completely halt India's militarization efforts in the Andaman Sea.
