This is the first series dealing with Iranian/Persian history and the first of the Great Persian Empires.
Eventually I would like to cover all of the various empires that rose up in the lands and regions of what is now present day Iran. The lands that would become the Achaemenid Empire or first Persian Empire were ruled by multiple peoples.
Some of these people were the Medians, Elamites, Persians and Babylonians. Cyrus the Great, a Persian, would unite these lands and found the largest empire that the world had yet seen.
Many of these people would come to refer to Cyrus as "father" rather than conqueror or tyrant.

This is the first series dealing with Iranian/Persian history and Achaemenid Persian Empire. Eventually I would like to cover all of the various empires that rose up in the lands and regions of what is now present day Iran. After Cyrus the Great's death, his son Cambyses II would take hold of the mantle of power.
His reign would be short but it would also continue to lay the foundation and expand the lands under Persian rule. In this video we look at Cambyses II brief reign, his invasion of Egypt. The invasion of Egypt was successful in great part due to Cambyses II ability to turn Egypt's allies into adversaries. By his death, the Achaemenid Empire would be well on its way to reaching its greatest extent.

He had served as a lancer for Cambyses II and now sat on the throne of the Achaemenid Empire. In this video we take a look at the life of Darius from the ascension to his death.
The empire grew larger under Darius' watch than it had been or would be during the Achaemenid Empire's time. Darius' time on the throne was fraught with initial rebellions and uprising but once these were dealt with he initiated expansion and construction on an epic scale. He is one of only 3 to have the title of "great" and in the video we cover why...

Eventually I would like to cover all of the various empires that rose up in the lands and regions of what is now present day Iran. After Darius the Great, the Persian Empire was ruled by Xerxes. Xerxes would take up his father's mantle and attempt to complete what he could not, an invasion of Greece.
Over the course of several years the shore of the Aegean Sea was red with the blood of the sons of Persia and Greece. These battles would determine the direction of both the City States of Greece and the Persian Empire. The Greek City state allies consisted of Athens and Sparta with a few smaller Cities. The Persians were backed by soldiers from the far reaches of their empire.
Historians may have called it destiny...or fate that the two would collide in a series of battles that Xerxes did not want...the conflict inherited from his father and the Persian elite at his court who would not allow the past to be forgotten or forgiven. With history thrust upon him he acted as was expected of him. This episode covers the entirety of Xerxes life and rule, albeit summarized.

Bryan Windle joins us to talk about King Xerxes=Ahasuerus of the 5th century BC Persian empire. The history of Xerxes fits extremely well with the book of Esther. Bryan will be talking about reliefs, inscriptions, the campaign of Xerxes against the Greeks, and other archaeological evidence. The palace described in Esther chapter one matches the archaeological evidence down to the minute details.

Inheriting the crown with his sword arm, Artaxerxes would rule the Persian Achaemenid Empire longer than any of the previous King of Kings.
For 41 years, Artaxerxes would guide the empire into directions his predecessors would not. Long stretches of peace and construction marked his reign. However, it wasn't all peace and stability for the Persian Empire. Egypt would again rise in an attempt to throw off the yoke of Persian rule and her ancient enemy the Greeks were still rabble rousing among the frontier satrapies.

The Persian Empire is now well past its Zenith...the last thrust of cohesion is provided by the new King of Kings, Artaxerxes III.
He is able to restore the empire to almost its greatest extent by re-merging Egypt. However, the empire of the Achaemenids in the 300s is NOT the empire that Cyrus has founded. Petty squabbling and infighting among bitter satraps, threatens to undermine what he has reforged. In Part 7 we deal with the empire's last gasp as it descends into the tailspin Alexander encountered...
Part 8 and 9 will end the series which has been a lot of fun to make and I do appreciate all your views and support! Let me know in the comments below which Persian empire you would like to see next! My original goal was a chronological sweep but am not married to the concept so let me know!
